Odds are if you own an Audi or Volkswagen with a 2.0T FSI (EA113) engine you are well aware of cam follower failure. In short, the OEM high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is driven by a lobe on the end of the intake camshaft. On the end of the HPFP piston is a bucket style tappet also known as a cam follower. The cam follower is made of metal and is flat in design. This flat area is in constant contact with the cam lobe as it rotates. Over time this flat area wears down due to its flawed design. If it wears all the way through it can cause severe damage to the high pressure fuel pump and intake camshaft as well as introduce metal shavings and bits into the engine. This metal can contaminate the engine oil causing further damage to engine internals or even catastrophic failure. Over time we've learned this failure can come at various mileage intervals as low as 10,000 miles or less and happens regardless whether the engine is completely stock or heavily modified. However, if you do have an aftermarket HPFP and/or putting out more power than stock the cam follower does tend to wear out faster.
The permanent solution to this problem is the 2.0T FSI to 2.0 TSI fuel pump follower conversion kit from iABED Industries. This kit utilizes the roller bearing style cam follower found on VAG 2.0 TSI (EA888) engines and retrofits it to work with the OEM 2.0T FSI (EA113) intake cam lobe. To achieve this the camshaft adjuster housing is CNC machined at the fuel pump opening in order to fit the CNC'ed T6061 billet cam follower adapter.
